What It Means for Pharma Marketers

This article presents a case for the drug industry to adopt a patient-centric model in which pharma companies can develop unique expertise in decoding the behavior, needs, motivations of empowered patients and then use this knowledge as the basis for helping healthcare professionals and payers to put into place programs that achieve better patient outcomes.

Microsoft and Viagra maker Phizer have teamed up to sue Viagra spammers. Here's how the blogs have reacted ...

A Hard Thing To Fix: it was announced yesterday that Microsoft and Pfizer will become partners to slow down the Viagra spam that MSN users receive. You may have enjoyed having these email sales in your email inbox-if not Viagra, maybe you've seen "v 1ag ra," etc. Apparently, Pfizer wants a piece of the action because they are getting all the blame for filling-up the users inboxes. Unfortunately, the action is only going to be taken on the MSN Hotmail service, but any reduction in spam, even if I don't get to have some myself, is a win.

Microsoft and Pfizer Penetrate Viagra Spam Ring, Get Hard Evidence: ISP giant Microsoft, and pharmaceutical giant Pfizer, have (finally!) teamed up to deliver a one-two punch to those legion of Viagra spammers who are the scourge of the Internet.

Aunty has been saying for ages that Pfizer needed to get involved, as in addition to the anti-spamming laws available these days, Pfizer has good old trademark infringement law - not to mention all of the various laws regulating and protecting legitimate pharmaceuticals - laws which are powerful, well-established, and, perhaps most importantly, well-understood by the judges (compared to that new-fangled Internet thing).

Affiliates, Spam, and the Little Blue Pill: These suits are going after the companies themselves that peddle the Little Blue Pill knock-offs, and they are also going after "the spammers advertising for those Web sites" aka pharmaceutical affiliates.

Similar to the bloggers, Good Morning Silicon Valley uses a lot of double entendre in their article on the subject:

"Depositions lasting more than four hours, though rare, require immediate medical attention"

"And they're not going about this half-cocked. Hardened by the constant friction, the companies have pushed ahead with a total of 17 lawsuits against two online pharmacies..."

"While it's nice to see Microsoft and Pfizer stiffening their resolve against the outfits promoting and selling Viagra knock-offs, penetrating the offenders' defenses will be difficult."

"Clearly, Microsoft and Pfizer have a long, hard battle ahead of them."

The U.S. FDA seems more like a political tool of whatever Administration is in charge than a serious scientific agency. First Bush played games on Plan B. Now, the Obama crew is having the FDA go after Cheerios.

For the last 12 years, the FDA has permitted General Mills to make claims about heart health benefits. For the last 2 years, General Mills and Cheerios have been making claims about a diet low in saturated fat that includes Cheerios can lower cholesterol - claims backed by serious scientific study.

After the change in the White House, the FDA now claims this is a serious violation of law. Either the FDA is bowing to political pressure or they are grossly incompetent. If Cheerios are so bad, where has the FDA been for the last 12 years?

I'm getting tired of politicians playing politics with scientific agencies.

The cancer scare over Sanofi-Aventis' Lantus shows just how much power over a company's drug sales -- and its stock -- are now concentrated in the hands of a tiny number of experts. Sanofi CEO Chris Viehbacher came out of his corner swinging Monday, saying an article in Study of Diabetes journal Diabetologia that called for more research into a potential link between Lantus and cancer was "of poor quality." He also said that "quick and dirty" studies of the link were not the answer.

The antidepressants taken by millions of people may, in addition to sexual side effects, interfere with the ability to fall in love. A new theory suggests the impact goes beyond loss of libido and impacts the neurobiology involved in true love.

The search for a new National Coordinator for Health Information has not unearthed a viable replacement as yet. The former coordinator, David Brailer, resigned last April.

President Bush and HHS Secretary Mike Leavitt are leading the search, and timing seems to be an issue. Potential candidates for the position may not want to relocate to Washington for a presidential appointment that may end at the close of the current term.

Additionally, some think that the search may be hampered by qualified candidates being immersed in their own health IT projects.

However, there are pressing issues that require a national health IT coordinator, including communicating a vision that fosters public trust in health IT, coordinating efforts among federal agencies to adopt health IT and managing contracts awarded by HHS for health IT prototypes. Based on those issues, most insiders feel optimistic that the search will continue in earnest and ultimately produce a qualified replacement.

An FDA Advisory Panel has given Takeda’s Uloric (febuxostat) for the treatment of gout. Uloric is the first new treatment for gout in over 40 years. This was round two for Uloric, after having gone through review back in 2004.

Safety questions continue to plague the product. If the FDA heeds the recommendation of its Advisory Committee (not a certainty), it will likely require additional post-marketing safety studies.

Takeda and its former joint venture TAP Pharmaceuticals have been researching gout for years, but the holy grail of product approval and clean trials have eluded them.

If Uloric gets a clean approval, the product does offer real, significant patient benefits. But it’s still going to be an uphill battle to get there.
The male impotence drug Viagra may be useful for treating jet lag as well, according to Argentine researchers who gave it to hamsters made to feel like rodent globe-trotters.

A Call for a Public Hearing at FDA

Shouldn't we make sure that when it comes time for the FDA to actually create a guidance document on social media that it does it with input from ALL stakeholders? Survey results.
